When is the best time to visit Tanzania? It really varies on the area where you are, and there are many different areas that have their own climate and their own environments. There is no good or bad time to visit. The dry season is the most popular time to visit, which is from June to October if you are thinking about looking for a safari with all the usual related activities.
When it comes to the dry season, there are many animals which must come to the water sources to catch a drink. This puts both predator and prey close to the water. What that also means is that during this time of the year, there is also a shortage of vegetation ensuring that all these different animals are very visible to those who want to take in the wildlife. There can be crowding in some months of the year since there are many people seeking safaris. If you wish to avoid all other tourists, you should come during the green season of the year, which is from March to May, or you can come in the shorter second dry season which is in December to February.
Below there is a summary of some of the best areas and perks. Hopefully this will assist with all the planning and show some features for those new to a region.
Serengeti National Park
This is a park that needs no introduction to anyone. This park has an abundance of wildlife all year round. The peak season runs from June to September. When you visit during this time, you can take in the Great Migration, this is the best time to be able to see the region as well and camp on site. That can happen at a place like Singita Faru Lodge. There are many other camps like Lmai Serengeti or Olakira Migration Camp which will be a good fit for any of your camping needs. The Great Migration is always on the bucket list of anyone who wants to take in a great safari. It is important to make sure that you book in advance due to the popularity of this safari.
January, February and March: This is the time of year to take in the wildebeest and their calving. This is a time to see the newborns as well of the cheetahs and the lions. A great place to stay as well to take in the views is the Kimondo Migration Camp or Lake Masek Tented Camp.
March and April: This is the middle of the wet season and this is a time of the year when there is almost no one in the park. You can expect to have some rain showers, they are sharp though and they do not last for a long time. This is also the time of the year when there is a migratory bird species. This is a very large draw for those who love to see birds.
Ngorongoro National Park
June to October: This is considered the best time to visit the park because the temperatures are cooler and there is less chance of rain. The lack of rain ensures that there is going to be better visibility, and that means that the animals are going to be easier to spot. The thing to keep in mind though is that there are going to be many people here at this time of year.
November to May: This is the time of year that is not crowded, it is a great time to see animals.
March, April, May: When the rain gets heavier, it is important to be at a good lodge. During this time, there is a large group of birds that are migratory that are an amazing spectrum of color. Generally, there is also game that is more spread out because of all the vegetation. During the wet season even, there are not a lot of places that can compete with the environment and the game.
Selous Game Reserve
June to November: This is a great time of the year for seeing the wild dogs and big cats which frequent the area. The animals are easy to see in this time of year because they are looking for water.
June to August: These months are the best times to see many of the most endangered species.
March to May: This is the time of year that leads to the most rainfall and that means that you may not have as many choices in your staying options, there are many places to check out the birds.
The islands are best experienced from June to October. This is the time of the year when the weather is cool as well as dry. In addition to that, this is the time of year with great water clarity. It is important to keep in mind there are some locations that will be closed during the holy days of Ramadan.
December to February: These are excellent times to visit the islands when it is hot and dry and around 40 degrees Celsius.
March to May: This is a time when there is not a lot of water clarity and there can be a lot of humidity with the ‘big’ rains present during this period.
