Dodoma is the capital of Tanzania. Most people think that Dar es Salaam is the capital of Tanzania but it is not, Dodoma was designated as the capital in 1973 and many new government buildings were constructed but Dodoma officially became the capital only in 1996. There are many government offices in Dar es Salaam still.

Traveling to Dodoma is easy as you can fly in from Dar es Salaam and other places. You can also travel by buses from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma. Locally you can travel in minibuses known as dala dala in the local language and in taxis which can be found plying around the city.

While in Dodoma you should make it a point to visit Bunge la Tanzania, the new Parliament buildings are earthquake resistant and are architectural marvels. You should however, not photograph the building as it is against the rules and you could get arrested for the same. However, with permission you can visit and access the parliament building.

The Ismaili Mosque is another place that all visitors should visit while in Dodoma. The mosque was built in 1958 and the architecture has a British feel to it.

Another place to visit is Lion Rock. The locals call it Simba Hill, named in reverence to Simba the lion from the famous Lion King movie. You can have a nice view of Dodoma from the hill. It would be nice to go in a group to the Lion Rock as you will have fun plus you can be safe as there is safety in numbers.

There are many wonderful restaurants in Dodoma and you can have some delicious food out there. Do not forget to try the pilau and samosas that are filled with meat when you are here. If you want a drink you can get that too, there is a nice bar where you can have a quiet drink. If you like to party, then there is a disco where you can let you hair down.

There are a few hotels where you can stay in Dodoma. The New Dodoma Hotel even has a pool. There are other hotels too that are neat and clean and available for every budget. You have a few supermarkets too where you can shop for many items.

The Dodoma region is home to the developing wine industry in Tanzania, with some of the wine farms having produced award winning products.

Once you have completed your tour of Dodoma you can then go on a safari in the Northern circuit and visit the many parks there or you can go to Mount Kilimanjaro and climb it, or you can do what most people do, go to Zanzibar and relax and unwind in the white sand beaches there. Whatever you do or wherever you go, Dodoma will forever be firmly etched in your memory.
