There are many islands off the coast of Tanzania that are sparkling jewels for any visitor to see and appreciate. There are many islands though that are smaller and more remote and do not get the kind of attention as some of the larger islands, such as Pemba and Mafia. Zanzibar has beaches that attract throngs of people and there are many incredible options that are along the beach perfect for anyone who wants to visit.

‍Zanzibar

This is one of the most sought-after destinations and one of the locations that everyone comes to see. It has been a location that is sought after by people from all over the world. This is a lovely place that has many lagoons as well as other locations that have become the haunts of people from all over the world. It is a location that is full of history and that was once the location for the ivory trade. This was also a location where trade happened for Arab countries and the local people. It is one of the most picturesque locations in the world and it has been the home to many filming’s for years.

Pemba Island

This is a lush green island that is known for all its plantations as well as its gorgeous alcoves. The area is also famous because of a system of reefs as well that are off the coast and well known for the beauty that lives in them. There are many locations that are ruined, and the island is known as well for many of the abandoned plantations that are off the beaten path when taking walking tours.


Mafia Island

Located 140 km south east off the main land of the city of Dar el Salaam and as yet unspoiled by development, Mafia it is surrounded by amazing reefs and sea life. It is also a location that is well known for its population of whale sharks and protected turtles. There are also small, amazing beaches all over the island that are very secluded, sometimes hedged in by the untouched mangroves.

‍Fundo Island

This is an island that is off the top of Pemba Islands and is one of the largest in the system of islands. This is also with another island that is called Nao Island. There is some incredible snorkeling here is you are into seeing the beauty of the sea. This is also one of the largest reefs in all of Tanzania.

Chumbe Island

This is a privately-owned island that has a huge reef off the coast. It is closed to all kinds of fishing as well as all kinds of snorkeling unless you are staying on the island.

‍Songo Songo Island

This is a small island 200 km south of Dar es Salaam that has a very small airport for private charter arrivals and departures. It is well known for its diving, beaches and snorkeling. It is a small and remote paradise that will surprise you at every turn.

‍Bongoyo Island – just off Dar es Salaam

A 20 minute boat ride from the Masani peninsula. If you are looking for an incredible day journey this is one that will allow you to enjoy the beauty as well as take in an island paradise. It has over 3 beaches that are available for use any time of the year. There is not a real specific season when thinking about this destination as it is possible to visit year-round.
