Tanzania is home to some of the best and awe-inspiring natural wonders of the world. From the great migration to the highest point in Africa, there is plenty to see and do here.
Let’s find out 5 of the top tourist attractions in Tanzania.
1. Serengeti National Park
Perhaps one of the most famous parks in all of Tanzania, and the world, is the Serengeti National Park, a vast wilderness of open plains and home to wildebeests in their millions and zebra in the hundreds of thousands.
You will see all the big five here but the spectacle and natural wonder that tourists travel from all corners of the world to see is the wildebeest migration that sees the animals cross the perilous waters of the Mara and Grumeti rivers in search of fresh pasture.
2. Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro National Park will offer tourists a chance to see some great animals but its true highlight is the mountain itself that stands 5895 meters above sea level. Its white-capped peak is recognizable anywhere and attracts tourists far and wide to climb to its top.
The vegetation and landscape changes as you make the ascent from farmlands to rainforests that are home to some of Africa’s giants including elephants and buffalo. You will also find a barren moonscape landscape that is as desolate as the surface of the moon.
The best part about climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, is that it is not actually a climb but more of a trek. There are 7 routes and you can climb the mountain from 6 – 11 days depending on the route you choose.
Unguja or Zanzibar features beautiful white sands and is a great holiday destination for island lovers. Its capital Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers interesting alleyways and closely set Arabian style buildings. You can get lost in the maze without a guide but it does indeed offer a great adventure.
The azure blue waters are great to swim in and you can even spot dolphins playing close by. Pemba island which is part of the Zanzibar archipelago offers one of the best diving and snorkeling zones in the area. Beautiful coral reefs and colorful marine life attracts visitors from all over the globe.
Zanzibar is also known as the Spice Island and you can go on a spice tour and learn about the spices.
4. Lake Manyara National Park
Two-thirds of Lake Manyara National Park is covered by water which makes it an excellent destination to watch beautiful flamingoes and is a bird watchers paradise. It also boasts a high population of hippo and elephants.
Another of Lake Manyara’s highlights are its tree-climbing lions that seem adept at scaling the region’s trees. In fact, one of the best ways to spot lions is to look up a tree.
Baboons are another of Lake Manyara’s iconic figures with the park having the largest number of baboon concentration in the world. Some of the best activities to partake in Lake Manyara include canoes and mountain bike tours.
