Tanzania is the by-word in the safari experience. It’s not hard to see why. Not only are the animals magnificent, the culture of the country is rich and fascinating, and the scenery is breath-taking. One of the highlights of the country is how it offers both beach and green spaces- it is blessed with a splendid coastline and thick, lush forests.

The biggest draw in Tanzania is the Great Migration, where a million wildebeest and other herbivores follow the rain to greener pastures each year. Because of its position, Tanzania allows you to seamlessly experience Kenya and Uganda as well.

Depending on whether you want a quiet or frenetic experience, you can decide when to go. Most people travel to Tanzania between June and October. But in the months of January, February and March, you’ll see a lot of babies and experience wildlife in an uncrowded environment. Here are some places that are a must-see.

‍Serengeti National Park

The most iconic name in safari travel, Serengeti is the place to spot the Big 5- the most impressive of all animals here. Serengeti is undoubtedly the most stunning of national parks and attracts huge crowds. Go here to spot the Cape Buffalo, elephant, lion, rhinoceros and leopard among many other animals.

Tarangire National Park

If you’re into elephants, visit Tarangire and gaze at the biggest elephant population on the planet. Apart from elephants, you can see zebras, lions and giraffes as well.

Arusha National Park

This is a national park that gives you a slow, immersive experience. Take a slow drive, walk around or amble or canoe down the river here without a care. Keeping you company are birds and monkeys, many of which aren’t seen anywhere else.

Lake Manyara National Park

This is a place you need to visit during the rainy season. That’s when you’ll see the hippos frolicking in the water and the pink cover caused by the flamingos. The Park is also home to the tree-climbing lions, though it’s not a guaranteed sighting. So, don’t get your hopes up. Apart from the flamingos, you can spot other birds in this avian paradise.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Not a safari if you’re on a budget, Ngorongoro is beautifully placed between Arusha and Serengeti. This park has the largest rhino population apart from large numbers of hippos and hyenas. Head to Empakaai Crater if you want to get close to the wildlife and birds. This is a tour that you should undertake only with an armed guard. It’s perfect to spend an evening and is a perfect for the adventurous soul.

Lake Eyasi

For a journey of a different kind, go to Lake Eyasi where you can learn about one of the oldest tribes in the continent- the Hadzabe tribe. You might even be able to go on a hunting expedition with members of the tribe, spend a night in the village and learn more about the ways of life of the Hadzabe.

There are different types of safari experiences you can have. The most common is the road safari, in a 4×4 safari vehicle. If the park is in a remote space, your best option is a fly-in safari. In fact, aerial safari is great to get a panoramic view of the vista below you. A walking safari is slow and takes you right up and close to the animals. If you want some time on the water, do consider a boat safari. Another popular option is the hot-air balloon safari.

Accommodation is as basic or as luxurious as you’d like. From tents to lodges, you can enjoy your stay in any one of the national parks in Tanzania.
