The best time to visit Pemba is during the dry seasons – December to March, and June to October. But generally speaking, from late November throughout early March, a soft wind blows from the northeast, giving beaches on the southern and western areas of Pemba protection against occasional gusts of wind. But from June to October, the wind blows from the southwest, keeping the northern and eastern coasts sheltered. Ultimately, however, Pemba itself is at the mercy of the Indian Ocean, and its weather patterns can be unpredictable any time of the year.
Romantic, tranquil island
Located to the north of the Zanzibar archipelago, Pemba boasts an idyllic, quiet getaway island to escape the vibrant and chaotic buzz and hustle of bigger Tanzanian cities of Dar es Salaam and Stone Town in Zanzibar. Pristine beaches, azure ocean waters and powdery white sands and the beautiful tropical vegetation give the island an irresistible allure.
As you start planning your trip to the island, and after assessing the weather conditions, you may need to know Pemba is located south of the equator and its temperatures range from lows of 20C to 25C during the day and highs of 28C and 33C. The monsoon breeze plays a considerable role to maintain constant humidity without any extreme climatic changes. Under these conditions, visitors can go swimming, diving, snorkelling, fishing and take part in other marine activities like kayaking.
Two wet seasons
Just like Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania, Pemba experiences two wet seasons. The long rains start from March to May. The short rains begin in October through December. When the storm is at its peak, water and marine activities may be limited, but the storm does not entirely cut off enthusiastic sportsmen and women who can still be seen boat racing and kite-surfing depending on the direction of the wind. So once you’re through with breakfast, mornings are the best times to go snorkelling and diving. Towards midmorning, the skies always clear for a couple of hours and this is the time to go cycling on the trails, scrolling through the hilly terrain etc.
If you’re looking to visit Pemba, then planning for July through October is a good idea as you will experience temperate weather conditions that will last until the new year and this is the time most travellers from America and Europe make last minute arrangements to chase the East African sun to escape the harsh winters of the northern hemisphere.
November and December are also months that witness huge arrivals, and it is also the peak time for wildlife safaris in mainland Tanzania. Most visitors from Europe and the States like to plan their visits according to their children’s summer school break and July to September is the ideal time to make bookings for them.
The middle weeks of December witness the start of the Christmas season, and you can experience limited accommodation in Pemba’s Chake Chake city and many of the lodges around the island.
