The airport is located on Pemba Island and is about 8 km southeast of the main city which is the administrative capital of the island.

The other names for the airport are Karume and Wawi, and its IATA codes are PMA and ICAO – HTPE.

How to get to the airport

• By air: Flying is by far the most straight forward option. The flight from Dar takes only one hour and costs between $100 usd and $160 usd depending on the season. All flights are via Zanzibar.

• You can get to Pemba via direct ferry from Dar es Salaam that is operated by Azam Ferries

• You can get to the airport by local taxi called Dala Dala. These taxis will ferry you anywhere on the island for only $2.50. But the ride is usually fast and rough. Alternates include good transfer providers and taxis.

• There is plenty of parking at the airport and its free for the first 45 minutes.

People from all over the world visit Pemba to enjoy diving and snorkelling. Though there are other activities that a visitor can partake in, it is mostly a snorkelling paradise and people visit it to get their fill of snorkelling and diving. The white sandy beaches are also an added attraction and you can take long walks in the sand or just laze in the sun and get a well-deserved tan.
