There’s no better place than The Waterfront Sunset Restaurant and Beach Bar if you’re in the mood for a spectacular sunset. Situated on the west coast of Msasani, the bar offers its patrons a combination of great drinks, fabulous food and lovely views. They have their own signature beers and wines and their fresh seafood dishes are lovely.

Q Bar has been around from 1997. Situated on Haile Salassie Road, the bar is synonymous with great and affordable drinks. Watch a game, play some pool if you’d like or just tuck into some good food; this is the place for a fun night out.

Head to the Masaki district to The Corner Bar and tuck into well-made Mishikaki kebabs and Kuku ya Kinyege, a local chicken dish. Samaki Samaki is run by a swashbuckling Spaniard. Plates of snacks, beer and wine, and some great conversation can be experienced here.

Restaurant Al Basha

Situated at the Kivukoni Front, in the Hyatt Kilimanjaro Hotel is Level 8. The rooftop bar is perfect for an elegant classy time, no matter what it is. Have a drink by yourself, take your partner for dinner and drinks or just to enjoy time with your companions- this bar is good for everything. The cocktails served here come highly recommended and the food is good too.

For something Indian, the Alcove Restaurant Sea Cliff Hotel comes recommended. Good food, views and service make this an ideal place to tuck into a wholesome meal. Patel Brotherhood is where you can find homely Gujarati food. If you’d like a revolving restaurant, that would be Akemi, with its wide, international spread of dishes. For local food, Chef’s Pride on Chagga Street serves Swahili cuisine. Its coconut fish and pilau are must-haves.

You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to shopping too.

If you adore chocolate, Choco Mama is the place for you with its truffles and locally made bars. You can’t come to Dar and not enjoy coffee. Msumbi Coffee is wonderful for its blends of first-rate coffee. Once packed well, you can carry them home too.

Slipway is the shopping centre that’s right on the waterfront. A range of eateries, craft market and upscale boutiques make this an interesting place to visit. Other malls here include Shopper’s Plaza, Sea Cliff Village and Oyster Bay Shopping Centre. Green Room is an exclusive and expensive store for artsy gifts, jewellery, bags and bath products made locally. It’s a great shop for all your gifts to impress. The fish market if you want a glimpse of this energetic slice of life, is a must-see.

If you’re a reader, do check out A Novel Idea, Dar’s truly wonderful bookshop with every kind of book on offer, including maps, guides, modern and classic work. You’ll want to buy some of the colourful material you see around you. It’s better to go to the vendors in Mnazi Moja for great deals. The wood carvers create their craft in the Mwenge Carvers’ Market so make a visit there too.

The biggest market is Kariakoo Market- people believe that you can find pretty much everything there.
