Dodoma is the capital of Tanzania. Most people think that Dar es Salaam is the capital but they are wrong, Dar es Salaam is the biggest city in Tanzania and was the capital of Tanzania. In 1973 the government decided to make Dodoma the capital. Construction of government buildings started but officially the city became the capital in 1996. Some government offices remain in Dar es Salaam even today.

Getting to Dodoma is easy. There are many flights to Dodoma, Tanzania. There are domestic flights from Dar es Salaam, Arusha etc. You can also travel by bus from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma. Locally there are many mini buses which you can use to travel. Taxis are plenty and you will not face any difficulty traveling within Dodoma.

The best time to visit Dodoma is June to August. Though the temperature can be a little high, it is manageable. In fact, August is the busiest month as many tourists visit in August. You need advance bookings to stay if you plan to travel in August to Dodoma. December to February is the second-best time to visit. These months you will find a good number of tourists visiting Dodoma. September to November is the time you can get good deals in hotels because it is the lean season. March to May is the slowest for tourism, not many people visit during this time.

There are many places to visit in Dodoma and the one that is top on the list is the Parliament building. It is an architectural wonder but taking photographs is prohibited. Next you can visit the Lion Rock which is commonly known as the Simba Hill. Simba from the Lion King is eulogised here by naming the hill after him. You can view the city in all its glory from the hill. Ismaili mosque is another place which you should visit while in Dodoma.

Apart from these what is not widely known is that Dodoma is famous for its wine. Wine growers abound in and around Dodoma. Wine making was introduced to the locals by the missionaries from the Hombolo Catholic Mission. The wine making industry has grown manifold now and Tanzanian wines are ranked among the top 5 wines in Africa. The Tanzanian wine industry is giving the South African wine industry a run for their money, South African dominance in the sector is being shaken slowly and surely.
