Bongoyo Island Snorkeling Guide

Dar-es-Salaam is the commercial hub of the East African region. The coastal city borders the Indian Ocean. It is Tanzania’s busiest city and a great place to spend a few days learning about the culture and city life of the locals. One of the best highlights of Dar-es-Salaam is Bongoyo Island. This beautiful island is a serene and peaceful getaway that allows you to reconnect with nature. In addition to this, the beautiful beaches are great for relaxing. It is also an excellent place to snorkelling in the breathtaking Indian Ocean. This guide will help you plan your perfect getaway to Bongoyo Island for snorkelling.

How to Reach the Island

The best thing about Bongoyo Island is its accessibility. You will take a dhow across the Indian Ocean to the island. You can book the dhow from the Slipway Center. The trip will only take 30 minutes and cost around $20 per person (for a return trip).

As per the latest information available, there are four trips every two hours each day, starting at 9:30 AM. However, the dhow will not leave until four or more people book the dhow. Otherwise, you will need to cover the cost for at least four people.

Things to Keep in Mind

Before you trip to Bongoyo Island, keep in mind that the water may be choppy. Given that the dhows are small wooden boats, people who get seasick will have difficulty making the journey. If you are prone to seasickness, you may want to skip this trip. However, if you are up for the ride, you must visit Bongoyo Island. Apart from this, make sure you have something to keep your valuables safe. If you have a waterproof bag, that is perfect. Otherwise, you can wrap your belongings in plastic bags to keep them safe during the dhow trip.

Arriving at the Island

Once you reach the island, you will notice that there isn’t much to do there except kick back and relax. The laidback atmosphere is perfect for those that want to get away from the fast-paced city life of Dar-es-Salaam.

Since you will be spending some time on the island, you should book a shade banda. You will also be asked to place an order for your lunch. You have plenty of options for seafood. However, you can also bring your food.

Snorkeling

Bongoyo Island is a perfect place to go swimming. The water conditions are ideal, especially for snorkeling. You do not need to bring your snorkeling gear because you can rent it from the island.

After getting your equipment, you can begin your expedition. You will be amazed at the array of marine life and the magical coral reefs. You will see starfish, clownfish, angelfish, sea urchins, and many other species. Take your time to enjoy the waters, soaking in all the beautiful views surrounding you.

Heading Back

Once you are done spending time on the island, you can head back on the dhow. Like the departure times from the Slipway Center, a dhow will leave every two hours, starting from 10:30 AM, with the last one leaving at 5:00 PM.
